A fell top cache close to the summit of one of my favourite mountains, Crinkle Crags (2,818ft). Wainwright described the fell as:
"...steep buttresses and gullies above wild declivities, a scene of desolation and rugged grandeur equalled by few others in the district."
The rocky ridge of Crinkle Crags offers enjoyable walking and stunning views in all directions, but particularly down Langdale, Eskdale and the Duddon Valley and to the Langdale Pikes and Scafells.
The cache is situated on the highest of the Crinkles, "Long Top". It is located away from the main cairn in a quiet area overlooking Eskdale. The cache is hidden in an area where there are several potential hiding places (hence difficulty rating of 3). The cache itself is a waterproof clippable tub containing swaps and a logbook. Please ensure it remains well hidden exactly where you found it, and completely covered with stones on top.
There is an excellent walk to the cache from the summit of Wrynose Pass via Red Tarn as well as other routes from Langdale and Eskdale. The walk can easily be extended to include other nearby fells including Pike O'Blisco and Cold Pike. The cache is rated 5 for terrain due to the rocky nature of the summit ridge and the need for some scrambling on the way to the summit (there is a 10ft high rockface known as the 'bad step' on the southern approach to the summit although it is easily avoided on another path). Otherwise wear walking boots, wrap up warm, take a map and so forth.
