Štvanický brod byl podnětem ke vzniku osady německých kupců. Písemnosti i archeologové dokazují, že již ve 12.století
existovala na místě dnešního kostela sv.Petra románská svatyně. Od roku 1879 má kostel dnešní regotizovanou podobu.
Svatopetrská čtvrť zažila období rozkvětu i útlumu a tento kostel je prakticky jedinou památkou, která prežila asanace,
trvající celé devatenácté a dvacáté století. Postupné přestavby, poplatné v čase měnícím se stavebním slohům, nejprve
odstranily románskou jižní a severní loď a nahradily jí gotickým dvojlodím, nynější hlavní loď a kněžiště vzniklo později.
Socha sv. Petra u levé věže je dílem Matěje Václava Jäckla (1722), hlavní oltářní obraz s Kristem a sv. Petrem je dílem
malíře Václava Vavřince Reinera.
Tento kostel od r.1235 patřil ke špitálu sv. Anežky české a na čas, jako jiné kostely v Praze, byl kališnický a luteránský.
Řád Křižovníků s červenou hvězdou jej získal po bitvě na Bílé Hoře a kostel s dalšími církevními objekty vlastní dodnes.
Italské campanilly byly pravděpodobně příkladem pro stavbu vedle stojící zvonice, která byla vysvěcena roku 1598.
Opravy po švédském obléhání Prahy a po řadě požárů měnily její podobu. Za arcibiskupa Valdštejna získala dnešní barokní
střechu kupolovitého tvaru. Tři zvony – Petr, Pavel a umíráček byly svědky zranění a trvalé jizvy na obličeji Karla Hynka
Máchy, které získal jako památku na pád z trámu nad zvony.
Stvanice island and a nearby ford on the Prague river Vltava was the good place for the medieval commercial road.
It gave an idea to found a settlement of germanic merchants in this place. This settlement prospered and from the
XII th century a Romanesque sanctuary is in this village too. Big market places were in the environs of the sanctuary.
Expansion and wealth of this village supported reconstructions of hausis and this sanctuary and its contemporary form
is the result of them. The church of st. Peter is a last building monument of the Prague old historical district that was
gradually demolished at building boom in the XIXth and the XXth century. Building styles of this church were changed in
history from Romanesque to Gothic.
The church have a valuable decoration. The sandstone statue of Christ from 1722 is situated next to the left spire.
The big picture „Christ and st.Peter“, by a baroque painter V.V. Reiner, hangs on the main altar. The church was in
hold by reform confessions in the XVIth century. The Catholic ceremony has been performed by The Order of Cross with
Red Star since the XVIIth century. An independent belfry was built in 1598. Its form was changed as a result of many
extraordinary events. Besieging Prague by Sweden in the XVIIth century and many fires were reason for contemporary
exterior – the Baroque dome with a towerclock. This quiet place in the noisy centre of the city has a own charm. And
everybody who will hear three bells from the tower to ring together he will get great experience. In this church belfry
is the biggest bell with the name Peter, the second bell with the name Paul. The least noname bell is death-bell as a
guide for deceased people. Czech people say an interesting story about the Czech romantic poet and adventurer, Karel
Hynek Macha, he had an admiration for Prague bells and in this belfry he climbed up beams over bells and fell down from
the Peter. Since this time he had on his face a big lasting scar.
