Whether you're a visiting cruise ship passenger or a born Haligonian, you've benefited from the career of this man. You owe it to yourself to visit a memorial to Sir Samuel Cunard, a local boy who made good.
Born in Halifax of Loyalist parents, Cunard had an aptitude for business. He ran a general store, worked in the family timber business, and expanded into shipping. He was an innovator, and a founding director of the Halifax Steamboat Company. In 1830 they built the first steamship constructed in Nova Scotia. With other investors, he won the rights to operate the first transatlantic steamer mail service between the UK and North America. This was followed by successful cargo and passenger services, culminating in a fleet of vessels that comprised Cunard Steamships Limited. In 1859 Cunard was made a baronet by Queen Victoria.
There is public parking at the cache site but it can be busy, especially when cruise ships are visiting.
The container is the size of a small jar. It's a quick walk for cruise ship passengers. Please replace so it is hidden from view but easily grabbed. There is no need to explore electrical equipment, the statue of Cunard or the other sculptures in the area.
