The Rutland Railroad used to bring freight from Ogdensburg
(which was the last navigable port downstream from the Great Lakes
prior to the construction of the St. Lawrence Seaway) to the
eastern seaboard. It also brought fresh milk, cheese, and butter
from the dairy region on the top of New York State to the markets
in Boston and New York. The refrigerated boxcar was invented by the
Rutland Railroad. It was a car build within a car, and the space
in-between filled with cork insulation and ice used to keep the
contents cool. Ice was plentiful in the North Country, harvested
from frozen lakes.
