Easy location, but look out for the hoards of muggles.
You are looking for a blue kilner jar (see photo). The jar was a christmas present from a dearly departed aunt by the name of Mavis, hence the name.
There is no easy bus route to the cache area, but frequent train services stop at Beeston. If you are up for a good walk or bike ride, the river bank from Beeston to the cache is excellent, about a 8 mile round trip from the station. (OS Landranger 129 would be a help) Attenborough is also close, but the frequency of stopping trains is limited. (don't try it on a Sunday, I don't think any trains stop then!) The area is a popular daytime walking and bike riding area and is reasonably wheel chair friendly. At night it is a scary place, very dark and intimidating. Visit at night only in a group. I don't think anyone has ever been attacked, but it's not worth taking the risk.
The best place to park and the best place to start your walk is the Nature Reserve car park at SK516339. This is also an excellent place for a bite to eat or a coffee. The visitors centre has toilets, a shop and a great organic cafe. Parking is free, but they like you to leave a donation by using the ticket machine. I believe that the car park is locked at dusk, don't get locked in! The cache is about a mile from here along excellent paths. The Nature reserve is a superb place for a stroll, thousands of birds use the water as a home, take your binoculars if you are interested in the wildlife.
The paths in the reserve are safe, but heed the signs about quick sand, they are not there for a laugh, the stuff really exists and you will get stuck! DO NOT STRAY OFF THE PATHS.
The cache is just outside the boundary of the reserve, to the North of the public footpath. I would have liked to place it in the reserve, but I had no luck contacting the owners for permission.
There is an easier shorter walking route from the end of Meadow Lane in Long Eaton, (Takes 20 mins round trip) but it is not as nice, VERY, VERY muddy after rain and it is easy to take the wrong path. I really would not use this route at night, you might end up in the gravel workings. That would be bad! NB. Recent cachers report that this path is closed at the moment Nov 2008.
I want you to sign the log and draw me a little picture. There is a four colour pen in the cache. When I have a few more good drawings, I will scan them and publish them on this listing, with the ones already there. Go for it guys, lets see your best artwork.
