Geocache Description:

Walk and cache information
A short multi cache from White Horse Wood to Thurnham Castle.
In an area of outstanding natural beauty, this cache offers contrasting features with spectacular views, the remains of Thurnham castle on one side and over 20,000 newly planted trees on the other.

1. To get to the recommended car park when driving from the Maidstone direction, as you are on a dual carriageway, you will need to go a further 2 ½ miles before performing a U turn.

From the recommended car park take the woodland walk to the view point. Here you will see an Ordnance survey Triangulation station. These form the framework on which all survey and mapping techniques are based.

Clue 1: To solve A - Take 2nd digit of the station number and then Multiply by 2

Now head down to the medieval ruins of Thurnham Castle built on top of the Downs with panoramic views over the surrounding countryside of the Kent Downs. Dating from 11th century and also known as Godard's Castle the picturesque ruin of this castle held a strategic position dominating the Pilgrims Way to Canterbury. Robert de Thurnham built the present fortifications in the reign of Henry II. Some accounts suggest that Robert de Thurnham went to the crusades with Richard the Lionheart.
