Geocache Description:

Dead Men Cachin'

Come join us November 4th for a day of high spirited (some would say ghostly) competition where we will pit two man teams against one another. Of course we will also be socializing and eating that final meal.

Are you up to the challenge?

Dead Men Cachin’ is being hosted in preparation of our planned March trek to Mark Twain Lake in Monroe City, MO for the Midwest Open Geocaching Adventure 2007 or MOGA 2007. Not really, it’s just our excuse to hold a competition style event in the Twin Cities!

Several of us working together have planned and placed a competitive geocaching course throughout the Dakota County Parks’ Lebanon Hills Regional Park. We will host the event from the Holland Lake Shelter located at the intersection of Cliff Road and Lexington Ave.

Schedule of Events:
  • 9:00am  Teams check in and get coordinate download
  • 10:00am Competition Start
  • 1:00pm  Competition Ends
  • 2:00pm  All Teams must be back and potluck/socializing begin
  • 5:00pm  Teardown and Clean Up
Lebanon Hills Regional Park:

Located on over 2,000 acres of naturally preserved park land in the heart of the southern Twin Cities metropolitan area, Lebanon Hills Regional Park offers year-round recreation opportunities. Many undisturbed lakes and marshes are sprinkled throughout the woodlands and meadows, creating a peaceful escape for park visitors interested in summer hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, camping, swimming, and much more.

An extensive trail system winds through the hilly terrain, connecting the various recreation areas. Trailheads along with heated restrooms are located at Holland Lake, Schulze Lake and Jensen Lake in Eagan, Minnesota.

Shelter Description:

Capacity 50. Approximately four tables under roof. Modern stone shelter. Overlooks Holland Lake.

Features:
  • Drinking fountain/jug filler
  • Electricity
  • Groomed surroundings
  • Handicap accessible
  • Lake view
  • Large group picnic area with shelter
  • Oversized grills
  • Parking
Anyone is welcome! You do not have to be planning on participating in the MOGA event to attend this local event :) In addition, there are *plenty* of geocaches in the park for you to go after either before, after, or during the competition!

Pot Luck:

This is a "Bring your own food and drink" event. We would like to ask everyone to bring one item to share but it is not required. There are grills available for those that wish to use them.

Registration Fee:

$5 per person to help offset the cost of the shelter. Cash on the day of the event only, no preregistration will be accepted.

Event Format:
  • Two man cacher teams
  • The course will consist of 20-30 caches and the team will have to find as many caches as they can within a 3 hour time limit. All teams will start at 10:00a.m. and must be finished by 1:00 p.m. Teams will be allowed to split up to complete the course but the team must cross the finish line and turn in their control cards together. Each member of the team will be given a control card which will contain waypoint information, coordinates, and clues (in ROT 13). A trail map of the area will also be provided.
  • We will have laptop PCs to upload the waypoint starting at 9:00 a.m. Please bring your GPS cable if you do not own a USB capable Garmin.
  • The stages will be throughout the park and consist of either an orienteering punch or some other marking method of providing a unique waypoint ID. Each marker will be attached to a small card with the stage number listed. The cacher must make sure that the appropriate waypoint on the control card is marked. MOGA has used similar methods in the last few years. Caches do not need to be found in any particular order; however each team will be needed to show proof of punches when you return.
  • While we will be timing the event for those of you interested in knowing your time we will not be awarding any prizes or gifts other than a pat on the back. We will only post the times of those that permit us to do so.
  • We ask that you team up ahead of time and post who you are coming with. If you are not able to locate a teammate, please post that you are looking for one and hopefully people will be able to join up together.
