The corner of 10th and Santa Barbara streets in Santa Paula is surrounded by tributes to the three forces that shaped the town: farms, trains and oil. The train tracks, the railroad depot and the Mill building — a future farm museum — are all visible from that corner, and the California Oil Museum is just a block away.
Given those surroundings, the neighborhood's newest attraction might as well have been dropped from space.
It's a perfectly spherical, 5,300-pound ball of granite imported from India. It floats above its granite stand by a steady stream of water.
Santa Paula unveiled the fountain Monday, August 14, 2006. It's the centerpiece of Railroad Community Park, a privately funded venture that was officially turned over to the city during a Sept. 5, 2006 ribbon-cutting.
