Geocache Description:

Located on 'our' fell!! Hallin Fell on the eastern side of beautiful Ullswater

Parking at New Martindale Church NY436193 on the eastern side of Hallin Fell. The cache is a short but steep climb from the car park hence the fairly high rating for the terrain.

Hallin Fell lies towards the end of the lakeside road from Pooley Bridge along the eastern side. You can also reach it by boat or a ferry from Glenridding which stops at Howtown at the base of the Fell, but this will involve quite a climb to the car park starting point for the cache.

Hallin Fell is 388m high and has a large obelisk on the top, if you're feeling energetic, after finding the cache of course, take a trip up there and enjoy the spectacular views of and around Ullswater.

The Church of St Martins in Patterdale near the advised car parking area is the newest of the two that have served this area for centuries. This one was started in 1880 but further along the road south into Mattindale the old church still stands. This is reputed to have been built on Roman remains and the font itself is said to be of Roman origin.

While in the area you may like to locate one of our letterboxes also on the Fell and a very short walk from the cache. {Instructions as follows: NY435193 Box is placed under boulder at base of crag above car park. Church bears 170degrees} - letterboxers are a lot less accurate that geocachers so don't expect your GPS to take you to it but it should be obvious, hiding places for both LBs and GCs are similarly 'obvious' to the knowledgeable.

If the challenge of climbing the Fell seems too much then you are encouraged to walk around the base clockwise from the cache site and end up back at the starting point or your car where you can then retire to the Howtown Hotel Public Bar for well deserved refreshments.

Contents: Log book and pen plus floating flowers, silk flowers, shells, pens, highlighters and dice.
