Prøvedrift i Djupdalen gruver ble startet i 1907. Da het selskapet "Aktieselskapet Tromsøysundets Jernmalmfelter".
1.Verdenskrig skapte problemer for gruvedrifta og den ble tilslutt avviklet i 1923. Tidligere statsminister Christian Michelsen satt da med selskapets rettigheter.
Jeg antar at det var krigens slutt som gjorde at det ble mindre etterspørsel på jernmalm og at det derfor ikke ble lønnsomt å drive denne gruva lengre. (Jeg har ikke gjort noen undersøkelser på dette).
Det er tre gruver her.
Den første er oppgitt med koordinater over. Koordinatene til den andre er oppgitt i den lille boksen som ligger rett innenfor inngangen til den første gruva. Når du har funnet inngang nr to ligger det en boks også der noen meter innenfor inngangen. Possisjonen som ligger i boks nr 2 er possisjonen til cachen. Inngangen til den tredje er oppgitt i loggboka i cachen som ikke er langt fra inngangen til denne gruven.
For å komme til cachen så kan du starte på oppgitt parkeringsplass og sykle eller gå innover Tromsdalen (ca 7.5km). Forbi Svarthammaren må du nok trille sykkelen et lite stykke fordi det er mye stein i stien her. Men har du en god offroad sykkel og gode dekk så kommer du deg nok forbi her også. Så er det ett bratt parti opp forbi Svarthammaren til du er passert Røde Kors hytta. Etter det er det stort sett flatt innover helt til du kommer til veienden. Derfra må du gå til fots. Anbefaler å starte ved vedlagt koordinat "Hylle" og følge denne hyllen bortover og oppover fjellsiden til du er ved første gruve.
Alle de oppgitte gruvene kan man gå inn i. Den første er ganske tørr og lett å gå inn i. Men pass for takhøyden. Den siste har en litt liten åpning, men man kommer seg greit inn her på sommerstid. Mulig ikke på vinterstid. All ferdsel inn i gruvene gjøres på eget ansvar. Godt fottøy (støvler), hjelm og lommelykt anbefales dersom du vil gå langt inn i gruvene. Det er mye vann inne i de to siste gruvene.
Cachen er en hvit 1.5L plastboks, ca 5x16x22cm stor. Den inneholder en loggbok og en blyant og noen små bytteting.

The trialrun in Djupdalen mines started in 1907. The company name was then "Aktieselskapet Tromsøysundets Jermalmfelter" (The joint-stock company Tromsøysund Ironorefield). World war 1 made som trouble for the miningcompany and it finaly was liquidated in 1923. The earlier prime minister Christian Michelsen had all the rights to the company at that time.
I presume that the end of the war lead to decreasing demands for ironore and that it was not longer profitable to run the miningcompany.(I have done no investigation on this).
There is three mines here.
The coordinates for the first is given above. The coordinates for the second is given in the small box placed just a few meter inside the opening to the first mine. The coordinates to the third mine is writen in the logbook in the cache that is placed not far from the entrance to this mine.
To get to the cache you can start at the given parking area and then walk or use a bike up Tromsdalen (prox 7.5km). To get passed Svarthammaren you probably have to walk your bike around because there are a lots of stones in the path. But if you have a good mountain bike and good tires you probably can bisycle trough this area too. Then there is a steep part until you are above Svarthammaren and gets to the Red Cross cabin. After that is mostly flat terrain until you get to the roads end. Then you have to walk. It is recomended to start at the given coordinates "Ledge" and follow this ledge up and along the hillside until you are at the first mine.
All the given mines you can walk inside. The first is almost dry and easy to get in. But watch out for the roof. The third have just a tiny opening, but you should manage easy to get in here in the summer. In winter you can probably not get in here at all. You enter the mines on your own responsibility.
Good shoes (boots), helmet and light is higly recomended if you want to go long way in the mines. There is a lot of water inside the last two mines.
The cache is a white 1.5L plastic box, aprox 5x16x22cm size. It contains a logbook, a pencil, and some small items to trade with.
