Geocache Description:

This cache is within the OKEHAMPTON FIRING RANGE. Before you plan your visit you MUST check the DARTMOOR FIRING NOTICE. For information see: http://www.dartmoor-ranges.co.uk Do not attempt this cache if there is firing on the Okehampton Ranges. Do not go past the Range Marker posts when the Range Flags (Red Fags) are Flying. Do not pick up any object in the area due to the fact that it is a Military Training Area where Troops use "Blank Ammunition". If you started from Meldon, when you emerge from the Red-a-ven Brook valley, keep following your GPS but divert when you meet the track. There are well worn paths to follow all anong this ridgeline and no need to enter the clitter fields. The views from this tor and the ridgeline up to High Willhays are outstanding. The cache is a 200ml clip box with log book in a 35 mm film container. It may not have a pen. (If you want to make a walk of it, can I suggest you take the following route. Park at the Meldon Dam car park - where there are toilets. Walk over the dam and turn left down the steps. Go downstream to 'Viaduct View'. Then turn up the Red-a-Ven Brook valley and follow the stream uphill to 'Get Your Head Down' and 'Lido-Yes Tor'. Continue up, joining the military track before turning left on the col to 'West Mill Tor'. Reverse your course and follow the elephant track up 'Yes Tor', 'High Willhays' and on to 'Fordsland Ledge'. Drop down to 'Black Tor' - following animal tracks through the featherbed is best. If you want to take in 'Shelstone Tor' as well, drop straight down to the river and then up 100 m before rising slowly up animal tracks to Shelstone. Then back to Meldon. Alternatively go from Black Tor to the track bend at N50 41.809 W004 01.568 and then curl around Longstone Hill back to the dam. Hope you enjoy the walk and the caches.)
