I went down to replace the Beaverhole cache today and thought I'd place one on the way back out. Having camped, spelunked, and explored the area in the late 70's and early 80's, I remembered visiting the Big Run Falls many times and thought I'd share.
Hmm, seems to be a little of the *You can't go back* syndrome here. You know what I mean. You go back to where you grew up and find that the backyard is smaller, Billy Bob's gas station was there where the fast food place is, I went to school where that parking lot is, etc. This was one of those times. I remembered the falls being farther from the road and they had a bit more of a drop. Heck, it's only been 25± years since I was here. Befuddled memory aside, I still think this is a peaceful area and the falls (which I've downgraded to a cascade) would be something worth seeing at times of high flow. This will make getting to the cache a little more difficult though.
The cache, a three quart round tupperware container, is placed on a tract of land acquired by the WVDNR from the Conservation Fund in January, 2004. If you're driving a low clearance vehicle it's going to be about a .9 mile trek to the site. If you're driving a high clearance vehicle, this is going to be the closest thing to a park-n-grab you're likely to see from me, with the exception of the Virginia Iron Furnace cache. LOL
I hope you enjoy and please take proper precautions during hunting season. Primarily during the two week buck gun season that begins Thanksgiving week.
Man O'Day, I still can't believe that we used to take our VW Beetles all the way to the river, but then again it could be a *You can't go back* thing.
