Geocache Description:

Now a micro container slightly smaller than a 35 mm film cannister (you will need your own pen) somewhere along the route of the old Butts branch in Worcester

The cache is not at the above coordinates but these are possible parking coordinates for 45 minutes (all day Sunday). If no parking is available you may need to pay at one of the city centre carparks or you could be cheeky and park in the nearby out of town shopping area. Due to the size of the cache you will need your own pen; roll the paper and place in the lid before reassembling. The location is quiet busy so stealth will be required and please ensure the cache is well hidden when you leave.

You need to find the coordinates before you head off but you will know when you've found them! H is sure she put them somewhere in the page.

Please note that you have to walk along the riverside embankment to get to the cache and this can be underwater when the Severn is in spate.
The cache cannot be reached when the path is flooded.

And now some history...

It is amazing how times have changed. Not so long ago our city centres had lots of trams, power stations belching fumes right next door and the rivers and railways were the lifeblood of the local industry. Below is an old postcard of Worcester looking along the river. It is also linked to a local heritage site containing more information about this and other areas.

To the left of the river is Worcester power station (now an out of town shopping area), in the foreground the old road bridge complete with trams (the bridge was rebuilt in 1931), further along the river is the railway bridge and, from the viaduct (difficult to see but in view middle right) that carries the railway from Worcester Foregate Street station to this bridge, a branch line descends towards river level, goes under the road bridge and follows the river. The Butts branch as it was called was built around 1860 to serve the river and the original intention was to go all the way to Diglis locks; it never made it past the cathedral and was finally taken up in 1957.

Now the area along the river is a pleasant walk with a fountain, lots of swans in the water (the area is a sanctuary) and views across to Chapter Meadows and up to the Cathedral and St Andrew's old church spire (known locally as the Glover's Needle).

You may want to combine this cache with another along the river, A view of a bridge (Worcs).
