Geocache Description:

The cache is located on an island in the Newry Group. But what sets these two apart from the rest is that they are accessible by foot. But only if the time and tide are right!

A fairly easy walk required (approx 1500m) which should not cause too many problems, but a little bit of rock hopping will be required. The path between the islands and the coast will be obvious (ref photos).

The rock pools on the outer seaward side have some corals and an assortment of marine life for those who want to look around (warning – years ago I also found a ‘blue ring octopus’!). On the top of the outer island is a large manmade hole (large for where it is) which local lore suggests is the remains of a World War II coastal surveillance post (at least that is what I have been told). While I have not been able to verify this, it certainly offers a great view of the Hibiscus Coast, the southern part of the Whitsunday Islands, and Repulse Bay out to Cape Conway.

What ever you do – keep an eye on the tide…or you may find yourself wading back to your car. While not really dangerous or life threatening (no fierce currents to deal with), getting your feet wet may not be some peoples idea of fun (hence the inclusion of the attribute).

So before attempting – check the local tide times…
Use the local paper or use the BOMs Queensland predictions (visit link)
Use the Mackay Outer Harbour and it is usually half an hour or so later.

The cache is a large plastic ‘Sistema’ clip container, inside an ammo can, which contains an assortment of marine themed swaps. Thought we might try and keep it marine themed, even if the tie/relation to ‘marine’ is loose or abstract. Thanks and enjoy your visit.
