NEW LOCATION!!! NEW Coordinants!!! N 41* 42.283' W 073* 56.407' These are the avearge of 3 readings, all under +/-20ft. A small plastic container Wrapped in blue plastic bag located in Waryas Park, City of Poughkeepsie. The original contents of the re-hidden include Log Book & Pen, and the usual priceless geo-schwag :)
Drive to bottom of Main Street to the river and park, enter park and head South along river toward the pier. It is in some woods that border the park, which is located between 2 beautiful Bridges, The FDR Mid-Hudson Bridge and the Historic Poughkeepsie Railroad Bride.
This cache is well hidden and up a hill. I re-hid on January 11, 2007 and then again on April 5, 2009 after original was muggled, Soooo...Please watch for muggles. Be careful going up the hill; cache is hidden in a different spot from original, best bet is to go up GRASSY HILL TO THE LEFT OF WOODS AND ENTER WOODS FROM THE TOP. If you go this way it is just a few feet into the woods. It is in a safer, more friendly spot...but be careful! Remove cache and, if necessary, go down to bench to examine, then re-hide exacly as is. It is wrapped in a blue plastic bag so if exposed it will appear as trash, unfortunately great camo for this locale. The hints are VERY helpful, so you may want to peak. I have also included a new pic to give an idea of where cache is, because I don't want anyone to climb through woods, but this is somewhat of a spoiler (it is a sky shot from google earth, so it won't be all that much more helpful than your GPS anyway, just wanted to show there is no need to approach from dangerous routes)
The bridges here are both beautiful in their own way. I'd like to focus on the Poughkeepsie Railroad bridge. I walked across it a few days before creating this cache. Right now this can only be done by special permission. There is a movement to convert the bridge to a permanent recreational walkway. They have NOW STARTED this "Park in the Sky" and I am sure it won't be long after it opens until there is a cache up there, too. The history below is borrowed from that group's website. THE POUGHKEEPSIE RAILROAD BRIDGE was the first bridge to be built over the Hudson River from the ocean all the way up to Albany. It was a technological wonder. Opened in 1889 soon after the Brooklyn Bridge opened, it is not only higher above the water than the Brooklyn Bridge, and founded deeper in the water, but also longer. When it opened, its promoters claimed it was the longest bridge in the world. WALKERS ON THE BRIDGE. People have been seeking to walk on the bridge since 1889.
