Geocache Description:

Bordeaux Creek is one of the newest Wildlife Management Areas in the state covering about 1800 acres of Nebraska’s Pine Ridge.

Situated between Hay Springs and Chadron in the Nebraska Panhandle, this WMA is totally undeveloped except for parking areas on US20 and a county road.

We hiked into Bordeaux WMA to see what was available and thoroughly enjoyed the meadows, tree-covered hills and canyons. This cache is placed near a feature that isn’t really visible from afar because of the trees, but provides an amazing view of the surrounding area.

From the east parking area on US20, our actual hike to the cache was about one mile each way. Compared to many Nebraska caches, you will probably find that when the elevation does change, it is more significant. There aren’t any real trails to follow, but we were able to stick to barely-visible game trails for much of the adventure. Much of the hike is through grasslands, so don’t expect to be shaded from the hot sun.

We have not hiked in from the west parking area on US20, but next time we visit we will start there and report back!

Be aware:
--Many areas in the creek bottoms (no actual running water) had produced a good stand of poison ivy, so be cautious.
--This is a hunting area, so you may want to reserve this cache for an out-of-season adventure.

The cache is an ammo can with a Geocaching sticker and stencil on the sides, very well hidden using natural camouflage. Please hide as well after your find.

Original contents included a special FTF prize (you’ll need to visit Hay Springs to use it), a Harley-Davidson penlight, Corona Extra bottle openers, light sticks, letter openers, pens and pencils, a whistle, snake and ball puzzles and super balls.

As well as the logbook and a pencil, you will find a camera to record your visit for posterity. (Take a couple of photos if you like, since it may take awhile to use up the film…)
