A traditional cache at one of Scotlands most photographed castles, it can be damp, so bring your wellies!
Kilchurn Castle was originally built on an island in Loch Awe in the mid 15th Century by Sir Colin Campbell. It contained the first purpose built barracks in Scotland, and even though it has fell in to ruin, it is one of the most impressive, mainly due to its picturesque position. Since it was built the level of the loch has lowered and the castle now stands on a headland. Access is advertised by Historic Scotland as being summer only, by boat (Tel: Loch Awe boats on 01866 833 333 for times and prices) from the pier adjacent to Lochawe railway station, however the map shows that you can walk around the loch from the south side.
The level crossing which crosses the traditional access point was closed by Network Rail in 2003, when all crossings of this type were closed for "safety" reasons(See the related web page for more details). This was the traditional route on foot from the road to the castle, however with level crossing misuse occurring elsewhere in the UK it was decided to close all crossings of this type. Anyone using the crossing does so at their own risk and risks prosecution in doing so.
!!!! An alternative path leads off from the car park under the railway bridge.!!!!
The cache itself is a lock and lock container, large enough to hold the logbook and various small items. Please close it the same way it opened to keep it watertight as the area is wet and prone to flooding.
Initially the cache has logbook and pen, a few small items and a CD for the first to find.
