mumbo jumbo: Time for this one to go. Thanks to all who tackled this one in its various iterations over the last 10 years or so.

In case anyone was wondering, the anagram was CHINA EGG CO. The answer, of course, was GEOCACHING!

Geocache Description:


The original cache involved counting various letters off the menu options on the facia of iconic greasy spoon cafe Mr Egg. Sadly, Mr Egg was closed by health inspectors in 2010 but the signage lived on in Streetview. More recently, the Streetview image has been updated so old Mr Egg is now consigned to history. There is however a new eatery called Mr Egg very close to where the old one used to be. So the cache lives on...!

At the start co-ordinates, admire the structure in front of you and then read the plaque (from “The pagoda erected here…” to “Implemented by Birmingham City Council” (inclusive)) carefully. This gives you the North co-ordinates thus:

N52 28.ABC

Where

A = the number of times the word "Birmingham" appears in the text

B = the number of times the word "city" appears in the text

C = the number of times the word "China" appears in the text

It is then a short walk to the next waypoint (N52 28.497 W001 53.852) which should put you outside Mr Egg where you need to be looking at the large red sign across the top of the shop face. The West co-ordinates can be worked out thus:

Where

D = is the number of letters in the second menu option on the main Mr Egg sign (make sure you are looking at the right sign as another smaller sign will give a different (incorrect) answer)

E = (according to nearby signage) is the number of the National Cycle Network Route which passes outside Mr Egg (not easily visible on Streetview - a physical visit will be required)

F = is the number of letters in the third menu option (including the two prefix letters) on the main Mr Egg sign

The cache displays an anagram which draws on where you've been and what you’ve seen. Just think about what you've been doing and all will become clear. A certificate (of sorts) is available if you email me the anagram solution.

And finally... I have placed this cache on my bike commute to / from work. This has the practical advantage that I can check the cache regularly without going out of my way. But the real reason for putting it there is that there’s just a chance I may see you in action!
