Until now I have resisted mathematical puzzles. If one of my puzzles seemed to have a mathematical bent, there was always a twist that allowed you to solve it without math. But if Markta can have a math puzzle, so can I. Here is one that needs only simple arithmetic to figure out. Once you see how it’s done, the values for the coordinate formula can be quickly worked out on a calculator.
The hour, minute and second hands on an ideal analog clock all line up exactly only once every twelve hours at noon and midnight. The hour and minute hands line up ten additional times between noon and midnight at the following times:
01:05:27.a
02:10:54.b
03:16:21.c
04:21:49.d
05:27:16.e
06:32:43.f
07:38:10.g
08:43:38.h
09:49:05.i
10:54:32.j
The times above are formatted as hh:mm:ss.s, where the seconds are rounded to the nearest tenth. Do the math and determine the values for the tenths of a second (a,b,c ...).
The cache is at N47 38.hcf, W122 20.ehd (revised 5/27/2015)
