Geocache Description:

Steeple Morden Airfield was the home of several different groups of British and American airmen during World War 2. A striking memorial is situated at the cache's headline co-ordinates.

As well as collecting the necessary information for the cache co-ordinates, please spend some time looking at all the different plaques and engravings, and think of those who gave their lives so that we can enjoy our freedom.

Parking is available at the memorial, and the cache is easily walkable from there.

From the memorial:
  • the first combat mission flown by the 355th Fighter Group was on ab Sep 43.
  • amongst the "Units assigned or attached" to "AAF Station F-122" were the "cd WS" and the "efg AES".
The cache is at N52° 03.(a+d)(b+c)d W000° 06.fge, which is less than 200m from the memorial.

More information about Steeple Morden Airfield and its war-time activities can be found at http://www.steeplemorden.com/SteepleMordenAirfield.htm and http://www.roll-of-honour.com/Cambridgeshire/SteepleMorden355thFighterGroup.html.
