Bereits im 10. Jahrhundert wurde auf dem Berg eine kleine, aus
Holz bestehende Wehranlage zur Kontrolle des umliegenden Gebietes
errichtet.
Der vermutliche "Wohnturm" wurde bis ins 14. Jahrhundert ständig
erweitert.
Unter den Magdeburger Burgherren wurde die Burg um drei Türme,
einen Palais und eine Kapelle, später noch um den heutigen
Stadtturm und eine Ringmauer erweitert.
Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts wurde die Burg von Fürst Johann Carl
Khevenhüller-Metsch restauriert und für die Öffentlichkeit
zugänglich gemacht.
Durch die russische Besatzungmacht erlitt die Burg schwere Schäden
an der Bausubstanz. Weiters gingen große Teile der Einrichtung
verloren. 1956 wurde die Burg nochmals von der Familie
Khevenhüller-Metsch restauriert und 1957 wieder zur Besichtigung
freigegeben.
Sehenswert sind neben der Burganlage das
"Maximilian-von-Mexiko-Museum", die Waffensammlung, ein
Heimatmuseum, sowie archäologische Funde aus dem
Burgbereich.
Der Eintritt zur Burg ist nicht unentgeltlich, wird aber sehr
empfohlen! Der Cache liegt außerhalb der Burganlage und ist eine
kleine Plastikbox, die neben Logbuch, Cachenote und einen Bleistift
noch kleine Tauschgegenstände enthält.

Since the 10th Century, there was a small wooden castle on this
mountain. It was build to control the local region. The guessed
"Apartmenttower" was repeatedly upgraded until the 14th
century.
The Magdeburger lords of the castle added tree towers, a palais
and a chapel. Later they added the up to date city tower an a
curtain wall.
At the beginning of the 20th century the castle was renovated and
opened to the public by the Earl Johann Khevenhüller-Metsch.
Under the russian occupying forces after WWII the building fabric became
badly damaged. Furthermore the bulk furniture was lost. In 1956 the
castle was renovated by family Kevenhüller-Metsch once more and was
opened to the public in the year 1957.
Well worth seeing in addition to the castle is the "Maximilian von
Mexico" museum, the huge collection of arms an armor, the mueseum
of local history and the archaeological finds from the
castleground.
The admission isn't free but highly recommended. The cache is
hidden outside the castle and is a small plastic-box which contains
a logbook, the cachenote, a pencil and small trading
items.
