Geocache Description:

Turn east at the light in Chewelah. Turn south on Cottonwood Road and then east on Horseshoe Road. Take the left road at the Y. Best place to begin your ascent is
N48 16.296' W117 39.406'

Chewelah began as one of the mining boom towns of the late 1800's. The Old Dominion Mine was opened nearby when gold was discovered. This brought many gold-seekers into the area to "strike it rich." In 1883, silver and lead strikes were found at Embry Camp, but these didn't last too long before they petered out. By 1910, there were almost 1,500 residents in Chewelah. Chewelah was unique compared to the other mining boom towns because its ore continued to be produced until the mid-1900's. The mines have since ceased to produce their ore, but Chewelah continues to survive with a nostalgic look at its boom town history.

There are many ascents to the top. Everyone I talked to had a favorite "path". There are portions of trails. The view is spectacular. Rest on the rock that envelopes the benchmark.

The container is an ammo can. Original contents are a flashlight, TB, bird, log, pencil, necklace, crystal, stained glass, crucifix.
