The whale gate marks the route of an old railroad track.
Look through the gate, and sight along the straight and level edge of the artichoke field. Nearly a century ago, the Ocean Shore Railroad ran here, on its planned route south from San Francisco to Santa Cruz.
The railroad never made it there. South of here, stations were built at the now defunct villages of Purissima and Lobitos, but it ended at Tunitas Creek. The Ocean Shore Railroad went bankrupt in 1920. The roadbed was recycled for other purposes, but its course can still be seen in old road cuts and field alignments, and viewed on topographic maps and aerial photos.
Update 7/29/09: After three mugglings of successively tougher hides, we're now up to a somewhat evil camo'ed bison tube. We will accept duplicate logs from previous finders on this new version.
(Part of the attachment for the last version of the cache remains glued below the historical sign - that's not the cache any more, so don't log it or report a problem if find it.)
