Geocache Description:

A cross across from Applecross

The monastery of Applecross is one of the most important religious sites in Scotland. It was founded in 673AD by Maelrhubha, a monk from the north of Ireland. He died in his 80th year in 722AD and is buried here. The monastery was a place of sanctuary, it's boundaries marked by girth crosses, one of which still remains here.

Nothing of the monastery remains except the cross slab to the right of the gate and, in the church, the fragments of two other carved stones. The present church was built in 1817 and is used for occasional worship.

Why the title? Simple. To bring you to see the cross slab across the bay from Applecross.

There is ample parking outside the church or right next door at the Applecross Heritage Centre and Shop, which incidentally is also worth a visit.
