Geocache Description:

A walk around National Trust woodlands on west side of Windermere lake. Answer the questions to get final location of cache, which is not under tree canopy and within walking distance.
Above co-ordinates are Ash Landing car park, centre of operations. Can be found in snow. Boat access possible hence attribute.

Autumn 2006. National Trust 2m high fence around Station ruin. Removed 2015. Tea shop now operating nearby. Additional questions added, old still answerable. This is one of a series of geocaches put out for the Windermere on Water event taking place over weekend in June 2006. The last event was http://www.wow2008.co.uk/ June 2009. Cache can be reached by boat, bike or on foot. When you fill in log book, feel free to describe methods of transport used to find cache. Please rehide cache carefully, as popular path. Please don't crush with rocks.

This cache is also one of 21 stations or viewpoints that Thomas West describes in probably the first guide book to the Lake District. (see 'User's Web Page' link above.) Copies available to read in most Cumbrian libraries. Peter Crosthwaite, of Keswick, published in 1794, outline maps showing these stations around the four major lakes West describes. Coniston has four, Windermere has five, Derwentwater has eight and Bassenthwaite lake four. There are TWO bonus stations elsewhere. These stations were chosen for scenic view and charm, making ideal geocache locations. Nowadays trees have matured to obstruct much of the views. Hidden in four of Thomas West caches are clues to a bonus cache and 22nd location on another major lake.

After visiting Windermere Station have a walk through Ash Landing, with several information boards about flora and fauna. The permissive footpath to Beatrix Potter's house at Hill Top, Sawrey starts near here.

Whilst setting this several varieties of seldom seen, rarely spotted woodpecker were drumming and yaffling. As well nuthatch. What a racket.

Final cache location has tidal flow of people due to nearby ferry. Discretion advised. The final co-ordinates will get you near the cache. If in a hurry, use clue once near, otherwise wait several minutes for gpsr to average. Although cache in open area, not under trees unlike questions. Question co-ords will get you near enough to solve them.

1. N 054° 21.060 W 002° 56.543 At Windermere Station, how many small cross shaped windows are there in the remaining structure? This is A. (Not affected by National Trust fence.)

2. Although Windermere Station is now a ruin, some window frames and doorways are still intact, forming a hole big enough to pass through. How many intact window and door apertures in total?
Include the two partially bricked up and the main arch, but not ones totally bricked up. This is B.

Add A to B, divide result with A to get P (B+A)/A = P
(Difficult to answer confidently, with National Trust fence, but all apertures still visible. Take path below to east face to check.)

3. The remains of stone spiral staircase in Windermere Station has stumps of treads above and below several complete stone steps. How many complete stone steps, including one on floor, remain? This is Q.
(NOT answerable whilst National Trust fence in place. Use alternative solution.)

4. How many shades and colours are mentioned on plaque attached to Windermere Station? This is R
