Gilgamesh's Cottage

A little over five millennia ago a people group known as the Sumerians established a remarkable civilization in Mesopotamia just north of the Persian Gulf. The earliest writing we know of comes from the Sumerians. Much of the region in which they lived was wetland. The Sumerians used the natural resources of the marsh to build rather elaborate homes out of reeds.

An idea of the architecture is preserved in ancient artwork carved on a stone trough from ancient Uruk.

With little change in the circumstances, people who live in the same marshy wetlands have conserved those building practices.




This is a 0.51 mile hike from the Shoreview parking lot tunnel to the final cache.
