When this cache was set in 2006 the route that this historic Routemaster on the number 9 route went from Charing Cross to the Royal Albert Hall passing all the waypoints. The Routemaster buses no long runs, but has been replaced by the new Borismaster bus, however the route has been changed, slightly! With the coordiantes and questions below gather the answers at the end of the route you will be looking for a "Key" to a set of gates. You could walk or cycle the lenght of the route too.
The coordiantes, clues and questions; NORTH ab cd.efg WEST hij kl.mno Before boarding the bus at Charing Cross you'll find the answer for the the first question; N51º30.510 W000º07.518 Charing Cross is a replica of the first Cross that was commissioned by King Edward I to honour the death of his beloved wife Eleanor of Castile. 12 of these crosses were erected between Harby, near Lincoln, and this one to mark the places where her body laid overnight on the funeral procession to Westminster Abbey in 1290. Today Charing Cross also marks the point where all mileage to and from the capital are measured from. Q1. The first digit in the year that the stone was laid in the Cross = e N51º30.439 W000º07.659 Statue of King Charles I (reigned 1625-1649) was born at Fife, Scotland, 1600. Controversy and disputes erupted throughout his reign. They eventually led to civil wars throughout the Kingdom until his death sentence by Parliamentarians. He was beheaded at Banquet House, Whitehall (the road where his statue stares down) on the 30th January 1649. This was the prototype for the famous glass-covered shopping arcades in Brussels, St Petersburg, Milan and Naples. Lookout for the Beadles who patrol in top hats and tailcoats, whose job it is to keep out the ruffians and stop shoppers from humming and running! It was originally built in 1825 as the grand entrance to Buckingham Palace. When the palace was expanded it started a long, chequered history of attention, neglect, praise and ridicule. Wellington - Sir Arthur Wellesley - was born in Ireland in 1769, and led England’s victory over Napoleon at Waterloo in 1815. He was also Prime Minister from 1828. Q5. Half the number of horses = n N51º30.127 W000º09.531 This restaurant is renowned for its contemporary fish dinners at the base of a rotund hotel. Q6 The middle number of the name of this restaurant = d, f, h, i, j & l N51º30.100 W000º10.501 A rare cast-iron mile-post in the capital along the old London to Bristol road. Q7. Subtract London with Hounslow = o Now that you are at the Royal Albert Hall, find this last clue nearby; N51º30.163 W000º10.674 Albert Memorial built for Queen Victoria’s husband, Prince Consort. He was born at Schloss Rosenau, Germany in 1819. He championed Victorian engineering and design. He tragically died young, from typhoid, in 1861. Testimony to Victoria’s love for Albert is this memorial in Kensington Garden, designed by Sir George Scott and erected in 1871. Q8. The number of men on the America plinth = g Nearby is a magnetic micro-cache with a "Key" to a set of gates.
