Geocache Description:

The location of this cache is one of my favorite places to watch the moon rise in one direction while watching the sun set in the other. Then again, you could do either/ or depending on the date and time.

The cache is located off an unmarked, but well defined trail on the northwest side of Lake Oscawana, in beautiful Putnam Valley, NY. It’s location on the map is the southern peak of Candlewood Hill, just south of Fahnestock S.P. Follow the trail up to the top and veer right at the fork in the trail. Once on top, at the height of land, follow the path north. At the first rock outcropping you get a nice veiw of Bell Hollow with the Hudson River at the southern entrance of the valley. 276* west (magnetic) from this point you can see the field at Cow Pie Ridge. At this point you’re about 4-500 feet from your destination. Many nights we spend sitting on frank’s gazebo waiting for the moon to rise over the lake. This walk is popular with the locals, who walk their dogs, ride their horses or mountain bike to the top.

Park in the cul-de-sac (41* 24.527N 073*50.929W) and catch the trail about 200 feet south of there, on the right (west) side of the road. You might be tempted to bushwack up to this one, but if you take your time and follow the trail, it leads you right where you want to be. Cache is a standard 7.62mm ammo case.

The full moon always rises with the setting sun. That is , within an hour or so of the sun slipping over the western horizon, the full moon rises in the east. From the gazebo the full moon rises with the setting sun on the following dates and times:

May 13th sunset @ 8:04pm
moonrise @ 9:03pm

June 10th sunset @ 8:28pm
moonrise @ 8:00pm

July 10th sunset @ 8:31pm
moonrise @ 8:46pm

Aug. 9th sunset @ 8:04pm
moonrise @ 8:33
