Geocache Description:

Back in 2001 as a publicity stunt to tie in with the release of the Planet of the Apes movie, 20th Century Fox placed a series of 14 geocaches across the globe, known as Project A.P.E. caches. These were released once a week, on a Friday, with clues to the location of each upcoming cache being released gradually throughout the week.

Only one of these was placed in the UK, on July 27th 2001, and it was reported missing on March 9th 2002 after only 14 logged finds. To commemorate the only UK Project A.P.E. adventure this cache has been placed at the site of the original hiding place of Mission 10b: Meridian Snake

Each of the original Project A.P.E. caches contained a prop which was used in the film, the idea being that the first finder would get the goodies. The UK cache (and one placed in New York) also contained tickets to the premiere of the movie. The cache boxes were huge ammo cans, originally intended for holding 81mm rounds of ammo. They were stencilled with the Project A.P.E. motif, as were the logbooks. The size of these caches probably contributed to their demise, being difficult to hide well.

To date only one of the original Project A.P.E. caches is still active worldwide (in Brazil), and although the Project A.P.E. concept has been abandoned by 20th Century Fox it has left behind a legacy in the geocaching world, with cachers travelling hundreds or even thousands of miles to find them, and obtain one of the rarest cache icons on their profile.

The Project A.P.E. icon

Although you cannot bag yourself the elusive A.P.E. icon for finding this cache we have tried to recreate the A.P.E experience as best we can for you. The location is the same, and there are Planet of the Apes items waiting for you in the big ammo can. As with the original, the first ones there get pick of the goodies!

If you want to see the actual hiding place of the original APE cache walk downhill from where this cache is situated towards the row of trees, it was hidden inside the hollow trunk of the large tree.

Please keep the Project informed of any and all discoveries.

An excellent resource for more info on the original Project A.P.E. caches is Markwell's Project A.P.E. page

Instead of moaning about how you climbed 2 barbed wire fences to get to the cache, try heading west before accessing the cache site and simply follow the public footpath. It's clearly marked on OS maps, click the streetmap link on this page.

You are visitor since 4th March 2006

This is a very large cache, please take care to rehide it well!
