This year Earth Day coincides with International CITO Day, the same day will
make a great day to organize GAS, so that is the name of this
cache.
There is no need to join GAS or help with GAS, ECO is an
opportunity to get together and help clean up one of our city parks
and we would appreciate your help. Your help for the day is the
most important thing you can offer and you don't need to be
geocacher or to join our group to make that offer, thank
you.
This is Medicine Hat's first Family CITO Event.
In the event of inclement weather this event will be shifted
forward one week. If this is necessary there will be updates on
this page. This event is weather dependent.
Medicine Hat's Police Point Park is a large urban park and provides
some of the best bird habitat in Alberta. It is a wildlife paradise
sheltered by huge cottonwoods and rich with every type of life.
Earth Day and International CITO Day are complementary
activities and this park is a well deserved source of civic pride.
Almost 400 acres of parkland exist along the South Sasktchewan
River bottom and they have been retained in a natural state.
Last years flood saw water covering most of Police Point Park.
The park staff have done a tremendous job of directing restoration
efforts and the park is looking much better. One of the things that
the flood did do was place a lot of floating litter throughout the
flooded areas. This CITO event is intended to be a Family CITO
where the primary target of our efforts will be removing some of
the flood lifted litter that was floated into the edges of the park
last year.
This will be mostly light lifting though any heavy trash will
also be tackled if identified. The park will be a great place to
excercise some ecoresponsibility and help bolster civic pride, show
your kids that caring can be fun. Birds galore live in this park
and walkways go to every area of the park.
ECO 2006
Start Time : 11:30AM
11:30AM to 12:30PM
We will meet at the Police Point Park Pavilion and everyone will
get an information handout. The handout will have some information
about geocaching, some information about the CITO idea and some
other helpful information like your assigned team, some tickets
will be included as well. Everyone can bring a brown bag lunch and
there will be drinks and snacks provided. Everyone will have a
chance to win some of the things that will be given away and we
have some nice geocaching prizes. There will be CITO coins, GAS
coins, there will an Omnia Vincit Amor coin and one Calgary Area
Cachers 2006, both donated by nicolo. We won't be drawing until
after the cleanup but you can choose where you want to make your
entries using the tickets provided. I will be asking people if they
want to help form an official organization for geocaching in our
area. It is a very simple committment and recreational societies
are very beneficial for activities like geocaching, please think
about helping.
12:30PM to 2:30PM
This will be the active part of the CITO, everyone will need to
have some gloves, sturdy shoes, pants, we will hopefully have some
pick-up sticks but if you have one of your own bring it along. Any
straight piece of wood with a couple of nails can work to eliminate
bending down, I will be looking for some. It won't all be work
though. In each area of the park CITO participants will be looking
for two event caches that will actually be hidden in trash. There
will be a small cache and a large cache for each team/area (up to
four) and in these "team coloured" event caches will be several
things. The event caches will yield the lat and long of a new
permanent cache and some serious weights of trash coupons to add to
your team total. These event caches will be two types, small and
regular and can be picked right up along with the trash in which
they will be hiding.
2:30PM to 3:00PM
We will ingather during this time and pile our trash up in the
designated area. There will be a waterless hand clean-up area and
there will be a place to drop off our trash bags. We will record
and photograph the ingather and our trash cleaned as part of CITO
event record. After dropping off our trash we will meet again at
the Nature Center.
3:00PM to 3:30PM
We will meet back at the Nature Center at 3:00PM and at that time
will get some type of total tally on how we did for the day. We
will take some more photos and make draws for all the neat prizes.
Our CITO will be officially over but there will be a breakdown
packup period and any questions that you have can be answered.
3:30PM to 4:30PM
I will be around picking up any unfound event caches, packing up
etc. If you have an FRS radio please bring it for the event. We
will use Channel 2 (Privacy 1) which is the standard FRS channel
for geocachers. FRS radios should work over most of the park and
will provide a easy way to pass information along or request
help.
Finish Time : 4:30PM
Location :The coordinates listed are for the Police Point
Park Interpretive Center seating area. The seating area is outside
the building on the west side. This CITO will start at 11:30AM and
we will meet at the interpretive center where everyone who wishes
can bring a brown bag lunch, water, iced tea and soft drinks will
be provided.
We will have a short meeting and then spread out to tackle the
task. We will gather the trash into one area so it can be removed.
A waterless Clean Up Station will be set up in the parking lot near
the Trash Drop Off Area with hand cleaner and paper towels. Bottled
water will also be provided. Make sure you bring gloves, there will
be trash bags available, wear long blue jeans and sturdy shoes.
Bring your kids, bring anyone who you imagine might be
interested!
Mission : To remove as much of the light flood lifted
litter as possible. To identify and remove heavier trash in any
area of the park. To have fun and let our children know we care
about the Earth.
Cache In Trash Out Information : A CITO cache is special
type of geocaching.com cache and if you attend a CITO event it will
increment your find count and put a special icon in your Found
column that indicates you attended a Cache In Trash Out event.
Organization Update The GAS
