Geocache Description:

A micro at a very "linear" park: La Barranca Park

This multi-cache will take you to four informational plaques placed along the linear La Barranca Park, which is a long narrow park that borders Bay Street in Santa Cruz.

The park honors the Santa Cruz Italian colony, La Barranca. La Barranca was geographically located between Bay and Gharkey Streets, next to Lighthouse Avenue. Today, there are over 10,000 California descendants from this small village in Italy. The Santa Cruz Genovese Fishing Colony is part of the Pacific Coast chain of Italian communities originating from the Riva Trigoso coastal village of Sestri Levante, a Santa Cruz sister city east of Genova.

The name La Barranca was derived from the early Spaniards who had settled the downtown Santa Cruz area. They referred to the upper west side as the La Barranca. And the Italians adopted the phrase.

The cache is not at the posted location. The posted coordinates are for the first of four waypoints you must visit to gather information from in order to determine the final coordinates.

At Stage One you will find a plaque:

A: The Davenport wharf was used for shipping cement until the year (y1)(y2)(y3)(y4). A = y4.

B: Picture C - In Hidden Valley, Luigi Magnobosco farmed a two-digit number of acres, growing apples, apricots and grapes. Add the 2 digits together. B = the sum of the two digits.

At Stage Two you will also find a plaque and a monument.

C: If the park was dedicated on mm/dd/yyyy, then C = mm.

D: If Gilda's restaurant has been in operation since the year (y1)(y2)(y3)(y4), then D = y3.

E: Italian Americans made up over a certain percentage of employees of the Walti-Schilling meat plant. E = the tens-digit of that 2-digit number.

At Stage Three you will also find a plaque.

V: John Battistini won a Purple Heart in the year (y1)(y2)(y3)(y4). V = y2 - y3 - y4.

W: W = the number of men pictured wearing a baseball uniform with "Seals" on the front of the uniform.

At Stage Four you will find a plaque and a sculpture.

X: During the summer of 1910 or 1911, Joe Loero caught how many bluefin tuna? X = (number of bluefin tuna) divided by 3.

Y: Y = number of fishermen that are a part of the boat sculpture plus 2.

Z: Z = number of starfish that are a part of the boat sculpture minus one.

Check sum: A + B + C + D + E + V + W + X + Y + Z = 45.

Enjoy! And happy caching!
