You can do this one on a journey up or down the M10 motorway (Moscow – St Petersburg). It will involve a short drive off the motorway and a visit to an ethnographic museum.
If you travel from Moscow, turn left shortly after passing Torzhok (236th kilometer) following the “Mitino, Prutnya” sign.
After approximately 800 meters turn left and cross the bridge over a river. Turn left again and you will find yourself at a parking spot near the entrance to the Vasilevo open air museum.
The museum collection comprises rural dwellings, household structures and churches brought from all over the Tver Region and re-erected on a territory which was once a nobeleman’s estate. At the above co-ordinates you will find an arch bridge spanning the banks of a small river (see image).
The bridge was built of boulders without the help of mortar or metal supports in the end of the XVIII century by a remarkably talented Russian architect, engineer, linguist and geologist (to name just some of his activities) Nicolay Lvov, who lived nearby in his own estate. (Another fanciful stonework by Lvov – an ice-house in the form of a pyramid – is not far from the museum).
At the entrance to one of the grottos inside the bridge find a boulder marked with a red Maltese cross. In a slit above it, find a small flat tin with CO-ORDINATES FOR THE MAIN CACHE.
The cache is hidden in a deep cleft of an enormous broken tree trunk. Be careful when climbing up!
