This cache was placed to mark my Wife’s birthday, hence the name. it is our first cache, so comments welcome on the location and the clues to get there. You will visit the town centre, but also the wonderfully named “Puddleslosh Lane”. You just have to go there!
Park in the Town Car Park (behind the High Street and well signposted), then make your way to the first waypoint in the High street. Your journey starts in Fordingbridge High street, and the initial clues will take you south on the High Street, then west on Shaftesbury Street. The final walk is about 1.5 miles, and can be turned into a round walk, or simply return by the way you came, which is good wide country track, with some potholes. It can be accessed by buggies and even more robust wheel chairs (and robust users!), although it is quite a trek. The final cache involves crossing a stile, but is only 40 yds beyond, so accompanying buggies and chairs will be within sight. The settlement of Fordingbridge (just Forde then) was noted in the Domesday Book of 1066. Much of the current High Street and adjoining centre of town have developed since the late 17th and early 18th centuries when a series of fires devastated the town. Some buildings show their building dates. It was once an important crossing point for the River Avon, and a junction of the Ringwood to Salisbury and Cranborne to Southampton roads. The Town is still well served by watering places. Our favourites? For coffee, snacks and meals, “Bridges”, very near your start point. For a pub lunch, “The George” is on the Town Bridge with stunning river views. Otherwise, any of the local pubs or cafes will look after you well. Your walk will take you through some lovely country, cross an old railway line, and visit my favourite street name anywhere! Enjoy your walk.
