For many years, one of the only ways to travel to West Chambers
County from the Baytown area was down Tri-Cities Beach road and
across the bascule bridge (drawbridge) over Cedar Bayou. After
startup of the U.S. Steel Texas Works steel mill in west Chambers
County in 1970, this span became heavily relied upon by workers
traveling to and from the plant. The old bascule bridge, however,
was beset with problems and was often out of service for extended
periods. As you can imagine, this wrecked havoc on the daily
commute of the steel workers, so in the 1980's, the state built the
Spur 55 (now Hwy 99) bridge over Cedar Bayou near Roseland park.
The Hwy 99 bridge is a fixed span that is high enough to allow
barge traffic to easily pass beneath.
After the opening of this new, more direct route, the old
bascule bridge was closed, and later, demolished. At the cache
site, the road appears to just dead-end into the bayou. If you look
closely, you can see where the road continues on the other
side.
Parking within 20 feet of the cache.
