Geocache Description:

This cache is placed on Mt Feathertop, Victoria's second highest peak. There are several ways in, the most famous and easiest is along the Razorback track. This is an 11 km track beginning at the Diamantina Hut, about 2 km.s down the road from the Mt Hotham Ski resort at appox. S36°58.576 E147°07.283

The Razorback

The track follows Razorback Ridge and is generally easy walking on an undulating path. There are views at almost every part of the track, and the 360° views from the top are spectacular. You can see the whole high country near and far. On the day the cache was placed, you could see Mt Kosciusko way in the distance.

The last kilometre becomes a little steeper and more difficult, although nothing too hard. However, the walk to Mt Feathertop is regarded as Medium/Difficult due to the length and is rated at 4 hours each way - 8 hours in total. I passed many walkers along the way who gave up before the end and headed home. This should not be attempted unless you know your abilities and are well prepared.

I do not recommend attempting this in Winter. However, if you are an accomplished Nordic Skier it might be possible. However, the cache is located about 10 vertical metres from the top on a steep slope which will be very dangerous in the snow. Also, finding the cache will be near impossible under snow.

Respect the Mountain - the weather here can change violently and at any time, irrespective of the season. Walkers should therefore be prepared for all sorts of weather. Carry sufficient water for your needs. After fires a few years ago, plant life is growing back, but there is not a lot of shade for most of the route - use plenty of sunscreen.

There is camping not too far away at the Federation Hut.

The Cache: The cache is a round cliptop container around 500 ml in size. It is placed amongst some rocks around 10 vertical metres below the top of the peak. The slope is steep so be very careful when hunting for it. Take a copy of the photograph with you - I would hate for you to walk all the way out there without finding it. (You don't have to use it, but its good to have with you). BYO Pen

According to Ordex (11/05/2013), there is a memorial nearby in a cache like container. This is not the cache.
