Cache Details
When I went to school here, Wayzata was (ahem)
dreadful in sports. Well ok, so we won a soccer championship, but
we never came within sniffing distance of a trophy in baseball,
basketball, hockey, or football. Many long years have passed since
I was there, but recently, things have started to change for
Wayzata athletics.
Our family was in the stands in 2000, when Wayzata beat #1
Cretin-Derham Hall during the regular season...and were there
again, later that year, when Cretin exacted their revenge in the
playoff semifinals. We were there in 2004 when Wayzata played in
their first State Hockey Tournament in 50 years, only to see them
lose 3-0 to Centennial in the Semifinals. And when Wayzata made it
to their first-ever Football Prep Bowl championship game last year,
well, it was the same old story watching them lose to
Minnetonka.
So this year, we tried something different - we deliberately
avoided the games altogether, so as not to curse the team. We
watched from afar as Wayzata took the Classic Lake Conference
championship. We cheered when they won the Section 6 championship
to advance to the Prep Bowl. And this past weekend, we agonized at
home while Wayzata battled Cretin-Derham Hall yet again, in an epic
duel that lasted past midnight, watching the game on TV and wishing
we'd gone down to the Metrodome after all. But in the end, it all
paid off when Wayzata finally won their first-ever major State
Championship: congrats to WHS, your newly-crowned 2005-2006 State
5A Football Champions!
Location, Parking, and Access
This cache is located just off the public-access trail system at
the Elm Creek Playfields, just behind Wayzata Senior High School.
It is on City Park/Open Space grounds, not on school property, and
can be accessed from other directions if you're not comfortable
parking or walking close to the school.
To get to the Elm Creek Playfields, take Highway 55 to Peony Lane,
and go north over the bridge. Watch your speed on Peony, many
people (myself included) have been tagged on this road by
Plymouth's finest. Turn left at the light in front of WHS, and
follow the parking lot over to the playfield's public parking.
During school hours, parking may be scarce - during football games,
parking will be impossible!
I recommend parking over by the tennis courts, close to where the
trailhead splits at N 45° 02.792 W 093° 30.658. Heading left from
here, along the edge of the woods, is a steeper hill but more
direct route - taking a right into the woods is an easier, slightly
longer, and possibly more scenic walk. Both routes will take you to
the cache location along a nice woodchip trail.
We used to live just a few blocks from here, and would walk these
trails almost every night with Sam, our Big Dumb Dog. We also hid
our very first geocache here, only to see it discovered first by
the Mosquito Control crews, then by some local kids, leading to it
being archived. It's been a year now, and we hope this new location
is better luck! You're looking for a standard lock 'n lock
container, filled with toys, trinkets, a travel bug, and an
unactivated West Tennessee Geocoin for the first finder.
As always - thanks, have fun, and happy hunting!
