Vörs is a small village at the south-west corner of the lake Balaton. The water is close, but the crawl is away; maybe this made it popular these days. New houses are built, often owned by foreign families. The place is populated since for a long while, all building operations lead to archaeological findings. Once the so-called small Balaton touched the land at the border of the village, and now the second phase of the small Balaton programme plans to submerge the old bed again, adding further value to the existing beauty of the nature in the region. Look-out towers are available to watch the wildlife.

The small Balaton is Hungary's richest and most typical region as far as lake wildlife is concerned. Till the Sió channel has not been established, this was the western gulf of the Balaton and it's entrance served as a roadstead till the beginning of the 19th century: the ferry went from Vörs to Fenékpuszta, later between Battyány and Szentgyögy. Evenr earlier this was also the significance of the enormous Valcum (Fenékpuszta) roman fortress. Later on the Balaton has been drawn and the filtering functions of this region were disabled, also affecting the quality of the water. In the middle of the 80's a the remediation has been initiated and the surroundings of the Kányavári island was submerged, Vörs and it's surrounding are in the second phase. The parking and the look-out towers are already there.

Bethlehem. The village has an interesting tradition, you can see here from November to February the a big in-house Bethlehem, at least compared to the church's size. The installation is lifelike, it is prepared by Péter Futó - a former classmate of the owner of this cache - an artist and a publicly known person in the region.

Near the church, you'll find the famous stork nest, where each spring the first stork is awaited with great anticipation together with the media.

You can visit the Bethlehem from November to end February Friday, Saturday and Sunday plus on the holidays, but on request it can be shown at other times as well.
