Timeos Stavros means Holy Cross. The name is a common one for
summits in Greece. The summit is 433 meter asl, with a small chapel
upon. It is situated on the south coast of Crete in Rethymnon
Province, near Plakias. The nearest village is Lefkogia, a few
kilometres east of Plakias, on the road from Rethymnon to Plakias.
The Rethymnon/Plakias bus stops there and you can park your car if
you want walk from the village: N35°10.719, E024°26.582
With a car it is possible to drive along an unpaved road, narrow
and steep some places to the southwestern flanks of the summit. Out
of Lefkogia, take the signposted road southwards to Skinaria. At
the first fork, take left on the unpaved road just after the old
laundry. After a steep section with concrete, you passes a chapel
on your right and continue until you reach the summit road taking
off to left with a small parking (recommended): N35°10.130,
E024°26.301
It is possible to drive the summit road up to the last big
western bend, but you can have troubles to bend your car down
again, and it is on your own risk. We recommend to
walk this section to look how the landscape is opening.
From the small parking you need about 30 min. to the summit. The
last 10 min. is a track. Here are several places to take a stop and
look at the surroundings.
In the southeast you can look to the Paximadia islands and the
coastline around Matala. To the west Frangokastello castle and the
White mountains are visible and in good condition may be Livaniana
near the Aradhena Gorge. To the south is Gavdos. There are a lot of
small beaches to visit for a swim, Skinaria, Ammoudi and Damnoni
(seen from east to west). We recommend Damnoni reached by car a few
km west of Lefkogia.
The cache is a small plastic box wrapped in a white plastic bag.
Inside logbok, stashnote and tradeable stuff. It is hidden a little
before you are entering the chapel area.
