Geocache Description:

Kolvananuuro is the most valuable nature reserve in Eno. There are parts there that belong to a conservational program of groves, old forests and bogs. The place is also interesting because of its geological history and views over the canyon. A nature trail goes around the canyon, in some places at the bottom. Kolvananuuro is a Natura area.

Driving directions: Drive along the road that leads to Joensuu (main road 73). After a couple of kilometers there is a sign on the right that says Kolvananuuro. Drive about nine kilometers and then you should reach the starting point. You can also get to Kolvananuuro from Kontiolahti.

The prominent position of the Riuttakallio Rock by the side of the road that leads to Kolvananuuro (the sign is on the left) is also worth seeing.

Kolvananuuro is a geologically special area. There are two transform faults which have been formed by the moving bedrock. The second fault is formed right under the Kolvananuuro canyon and the other one is closer to the Lake Kalliojärvi. The faults have formed the deep and sharp-edged canyon that is distinctive to the area.

During the millions of years the canyon was filled with granular material but the glacier water has removed the loose material after the Ice Age. The cliffs of the canyon are constantly exposed to erosion. The rocky landscape in the bottom of the gorge is caused by erosion releasing rocks fall from the sharp edges. The bedrock of the area consists mainly of sub-layers of quartz-cericite, dark metadiabase and quartz-schist. The differences in altitude in the area are quite spectacular. The steep, 20 meter high cliffs make walking in the area demanding. In the southern end of the area the rocks make the terrain almost impassable.

To claim a find:

  • Send the owner an email where you estimate the maximum height of a straight vertical wall on the gorge.
