Geocache Description:

A Cache on the Monte Vioz - a nice "hiking" mountain in the Ortler mountain group. Perhaps the highest cache in the Alps, probably the highest in Italy.

The 3645 m high Monte Vioz is one of the highest "hiking" mountains in the Eastern Alps. If the weather conditions are good no spezial equipment like a climbing gear or climbing irons is needed to get to the summit.

The tour could be done in one day (about 1300 m up and down), but it is advisable to make an overnight stay in the very nice Rifugio Vioz Montava. The Rifugio is located on 3545 m and is only 20 minuts away from the Summit. If you stay overnight you have the unique chance to see sunset and sunrise on top of Monte Vioz !

The Cache lies about 70 m below the Monte Vioz in a height of 3570 m on the half way between the Rifugio and the summit. In the summer month you could get there on trails free of snow. The cache lies besides a very huge Rock (see the spoiler).

You could park your car in Pejo. A cable car lifts you to 2380 m (Rifugio Doss dei Gembri). From there a good hiking way leads to Rifugio Vioz Montava and to the summit.

Please remeber to take enough water and warm clothing with you. In a height above 3000 m it could get very cold (below 0° C even in summer when the temperature down in the valley is above 30°C). Also note that the air is much thinner in this height.

Regards, blackovis
