Callahan Extreme Multi-cache

This cache has been archived.

emmett: It is time to finish with archiving my caches. I don’t want them listed on GC.com any longer. Very nice site, but very terrible treatment of cache owners. When time allows, I hope to modify this and publish it as a new cache on another site some day.

Geocache Description:

This cache has been named Callahan Extreme because it covers the extreme outer perimeter of the north section of Callahan Park and because there are an extreme number of stages. With the exception of the final cache everything you will be looking for is in plain view, so the number of stages should not pose a big problem.

About Callahan Extreme

Parking is located on Broadmeadow Road. There are two trails that connect to the parking lot but you do not want to take either of these. Instead, after you park, exit the lot onto Broadmeadow Road, turn left and walk to the trailhead on the right, located approximately at the coordinates provided below.

From this point you will navigate to six stages to collect information you will need to find the stage seven final. The posted coordinates are for stage one. Coordinates for stages two through six are provided below. Stage seven is located at N 42 20.ABC, W 71 29.DEF.

At stages one through six, you’ll be looking for a plastic number posted on a tree at eye level or higher. The value of “A” is equal to the number posted at stage one. The value of “B” is equal to the number posted at stage two, and so on until you determine the value of “F” by matching it with the number posted at stage six.

Note - September 16, 2008 - The stage one number is currently missing. Use the following to determine the value of letter A.

A = E + F

Navigational aids

In most cases it should be obvious when to turn but there are a couple questionable spots. Here is some additional information to keep you headed in the right direction.

A short distance after stage one, on the way to stage two, you will come to a “T” intersection. Turn right for the shortest route to stage two or turn left, then right in the meadow, for a more scenic route that is a bit longer.

A short distance after stage four on the way to stage five, you will come to a fork. Bear to the left, then take your second right. Go down the hill and at the next "T" intersection, turn left.

GPS readings scan be spotty here in some places. Make sure you do not let your GPS unit send you searching in a direction that does not conform with the encrypted hints.

Bonus Option

When you are finished with Callahan Extreme, you’ll be well positioned to find Callahan for Kids on your way back to the car. By completing Callahan Extreme, you’ll be able to bypass the first stage of Callahan For Kids by using the coordinates for stage two provided inside the Callahan Extreme cache. About Callahan State Park

Callahan State Park offers hundreds of acres of hiking and biking. The park is roughly cut in half by Edmunds/Parmenter Roads. Callahan Extreme will take you only through the north section of the park.

Total trip length is about 2.25 miles including the return to the parking lot after you find the cache. There are a couple of steep spots with one uphill climb on the way to stage one and another as you approach stage three.

Well before stage one, you’ll be passing by the Callahan North Supply Station. The supply station cache page and the cache itself offer maps of Callahan North that may be helpful to have in hand as you tour the area.

For more about the supply station (visit link)

As for the other caches in the north section of Callahan Park, Callahan North Supply Station, Crazy Callahan Climb and Callahan for Kids will fit in nicely with Callahan Extreme to make a nice “four-fer” if you have the time.
