Geocache Description:

A cache designed primarily for late evening searching! Initially, it contains items that "shine" or "glow" so it would be good if cachers could continue with this theme when exchanging items.

The direct route is about half a mile along a smooth, stone and gravel woodland road, buggy and wheelchair friendly (but quite bumpy) to within about 20' of the cache. The narrower paths that branch off through the trees are child and dog friendly, but muddy after rain. The cache is a medium sized plastic box. Car parking at 51º 36.058N 2º 46.853W.

If you do hunt this cache in the dark you may be lucky enough to see a glow worm or two in the verges of the main track. They appear when it's properly dark ("when colours can no longer be distinguished") and produce a greenish point of light among the grasses. We have seen them in this area in past years and we'd love to know if anyone else spots one. Their main "glowing season" is June to the end of August, but they can also be seen earlier/later in the year. Obviously, if you find one, please don't try to catch it to take home to your garden - These lovely little insects have very specific habitat requirements and won't appreciate being moved, although it is acceptable to examine them with torch light for a short period. Day time visitors may like to explore the many winding woodland paths: This is a lovely spot to visit for the dawn (or evening) chorus, to see glades of bluebells and granny's bonnets (wild aquilegia flowers), the occasional fox, bat, tawny owl or greater spotted woodpeckers. Just remember to mark where you parked the car so you can find your way back...

We don't guarantee that you'll see a glow worm but the "First to Find" will definitely get one!

Be warned - in the summer there are a lot of wood ants about - you'll see their nests made of pine needles and twigs which can be up to a meter high! The ants bite so you're advised NOT to wear sandles!!
