Geocache Description:

The cache is a magnetic nano with a log sheet. BYOP

Camp Van Dorn was the largest US Army training base east of the Mississippi River. It was located south of Centreville, MS. The camp was named for Confederate General Earl Van Dorn from Port Gibson, MS. Construction on the camp began in early 1942 and the first troops arrived for training in November, 1942. The 63rd Infantry and 99th Infantry divisions trained here and later saw action in World War II. After the end of the war the camp was declared surplus and by 1947 former landowners were able to repurchase their land. The Camp Van Dorn Museum was opened in March 2005 and is located in downtown Centreville. It is open Monday-Friday 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM and on the 1st and 3rd Saturday 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM. For more information visit the website, www.vandorn.org. The cache is located outside the building and was placed with the permission of the museum staff. Once you have found the cache stop inside and visit the museum to learn more of the history of Camp Van Dorn.
