Geocache Description:

Vrch sv. Krize (Parukarka) - dalsi prazske panorama/St. Cross Hill (Parukarka) - another panoramic view of Prague

Mate ji? Skvele!

Vzdyt by prezila primy zasah atomovou bombou!

EN: According to tradition, St. Cross Hill used to be a place where executions were carried out in the Middle Ages. Nowadays it is a large and quiet suburban public park commonly known as Parukarka.

The natural starting point is the "Biskupcova" tram stop, located at N50°5.313 E14°28.137 (trams 9, 10, 16 and 19). It should not be particularly difficult to find the cache, though I tried to make its location as muggle-proof as I possibly could.

Got it? Great!

Now you are in the Eastern tip of the Parukarka public park. You can go back to the tram, but if you have a little more time, there are more amenities nearby one should not miss.

Less than 150m from the cache, at N50°5.145 E14°27.753, there is a concete "fin" with a small patch of asphalt on one side of it. I have always tried to figure out the purpose of this structure, but I don't have the slightest idea what this can be for. One possibility I've considered was a playing (ricochet) wall for kids, but why on Earth so enormously thick!? It could withstand a direct hit with an atomic bomb! Czech kids are not THAT naughty...

It's more likely it has to do with the complicated system of underground bunkers under the hill, which seems to contain more concrete than earth, but once again, what's its purpose?

If you have any idea (or actually know what it is), please make a note in the log.

Proceeding some 300m to the West, you will get to the top plateau of the hill (N50°5.107 E14°27.588) with a wonderful view of Prague.

From there, you can descend to the Parukarka pub (visit link) at N50°5.063 E14°27.492), a place with unique, placid atmosphere and something probably no other pub in the world features: a two-story WC with an observation terrace on the top floor (fortunately, no entrance fee is collected, neither for using nor for viewing)!

On the left, you can probably spot the pink facade of a strange old house, which makes an impression it was teleported there - there is nothing like it hundreds of meters from there. There is a story behind the house...

It used to belong to Stanislav Kostka Neumann (b. 1875, d. 1947), a rather mediocre poet who made his career through unwavering loyalty to the Communist Party and its political line in 1930s, and then his son, Stanislav Neumann (b. 1902, d. 1975), a popular actor (and hardline Stalinist, for than matter).

When the whole residential area was torn down to make space for new office development in 1970s or 1980s, the Neumann Villa was the only house to survive - the fame of the Neumann dynasty made the ugly house a kind of Communist relic powerfull enough to divert the bulldozers and pneumatic drills.

And that's all, folks - I hope you enjoyed the view, the beer and you had a good day!
