Geocache Description:

..Welcome to the FIRST approved Earthcache placed in the state of Massachusetts.. The coordinates listed above will lead you to the parking area, kiosk and trailhead, to the Dinosaur Footprints Reservation located just off of Route-5 in Holyoke, MA.

Approximately 190 million years ago, during the late Triassic and early Jurassic Periods, the land that is today the Connecticut River Valley was a subtropical region filled with lakes and swamps. Two-legged, carnivorous dinosaurs crossed these lands leaving behind footprints in mudflats which were periodically wetted and dried. These imprints were subsequentially covered with sand through a sequence of climatic and geological changes over the eons and the footprints became preserved in the earth.

The information above was obtained from this reservation website: http://www.thetrustees.org/places-to-visit/pioneer-valley/dinosaur-footprints.html The cache is located at Dinosaur Footprints Reservation, a Trustees of Reservations property. It is available for any Geocacher who wishes to visit the cache, and enjoy the reservation. Please abide by the rules and regulations of the reservation for the sake of the protection of the resource. We would like to thank The Trustees for allowing us to enjoy their property! More information about The Trustees can be found at their website, which can be found by clicking on the "[Related Web Page]" link above.

Follow the short trail downhill that runs parallel with the highway to an open area of exposed rock. Here in the slightly tilted sandstone beds, you will be able to find, see, and walk amongst 134 separate fossilized dinosaur footprints, some plant impressions, and delicate ripple marks of a prehistoric pool, all of which have been clearly preserved in stone.

To claim credit for this cache, you must submit along with your log the following 3-items:
#1-Proof of Visit: A picture of you and/or team member (with or without a GPS) in front of the reservation kiosk. Or...A hand held picture of your GPS with kiosk if you are caching alone.
#2-Dinosaur Footprint: A picture of ANY one of the tracks you find (with or without your GPS next to it). #3-Record the Coordinates: Of the track you chose to take a picture of. Use the Add A Waypoint feature on the Log Your Visit Form to add your coordinates with your log, before you submit your log.
