Old Sarum - following The Wombles (Wilts) Multi-cache

This cache has been archived.

Bill D (wwh): After some thought I've decided to archive this one. It's had a good run of over thirteen years now, but I'm finding maintenance rather difficult, so I'll free up the area for someone else. Many thanks to all the finders over all those years!

Geocache Description:

The original cache at Old Sarum was placed by The Wombles on August 25th 2002. When it went missing in spring 2005 they decided to archive it, and asked if I would like to "take over" the location, which is very close to my home.

This cache is not suitable for buggies or wheelchairs. Some paths are steep and can sometimes be very slippery, and there are a few sheer drops along the way, so take care with children and dogs. You don't need to climb any fences or leave accessible public land or footpaths. If you do need to do this cache with a buggy, or can't cope with steep slopes, email me. The total distance there and back is around a mile and a quarter.

There is a pay-to-park car park on Old Sarum very near the first stage of the cache. The access road is narrow and steep. This car park is locked to vehicles at varying times from 3pm in winter to 6pm in summer. Alternatively you can park on the A345 opposite the pub, in the layby at N 51 05.482 W 001 48.016.

There is a fee to visit the Inner Bailey, site of the old city of Salisbury, but you don't need to go in there to do this cache. The areas you need to access are open free of charge at all times except for the occasional Bank Holiday weekend, when some parts may be used for events with an admission fee.

This is a five stage multi, with four virtual locations leading to the final container.

N 51 05.591 W 001 48.212
A: You're at the entrance to the original city of Salisbury. How many gates are at this spot? (A few people have been uncertain about the answer to this stage - to clarify, you need the number of actual gates, not gateways).

N 51 05.657 W 001 48.416
B: You're in the old cathedral. How many words are in the title on the sign?

N 51 05.637 W 001 48.492
C: Enjoy the view. Now take a few paces back. How many routes could you leave by, including the one you arrived by? You're looking for clear well-trodden and fairly level paths.

Note: You are now on the outer rampart of Old Sarum. You'll need to follow the path on the outer rampart to leave this spot, but the next stage is not on the outer rampart.

N 51 05.470 W 001 48.446
D: You've reached a gate. Stand on the west side of the gate, facing the gate. You should be looking toward Old Sarum, and there should be a hedge behind you.
What is the gate made of, and which side are the hinges?
Metal gate, hinges on the left = 3
Metal gate, hinges on the right = 5
Wooden gate, hinges on the left = 7
Wooden gate, hinges on the right = 9

E: A times B, then if necessary add together the digits in the answer to get a single digit.

F: B times D, then if necessary add together the digits in the answer to get a single digit.

G: B times C, then if necessary add together the digits in the answer to get a single digit.

The container is at N 51 05.(C+A)(D-C)(F-D) W 001 48.(G-E)(C+E)(B+E)

You're looking for a 1.2 litre camouflage-painted lock and lock container. Beware of passers-by! Please treat the hiding place gently.

You can return by the way you came, or go on and take the next gate for a shorter but steeper return route.
