The Iron Footbridge (The Eiserner Steg), probably Frankfurt's best known bridge, is a romantic 19th century footbridge over the river Main. It was erected in 1868-69 by a private company of citizens as a third bridge across the Main connecting the center of Frankfurt with Sachsenhausen. The bridge was for pedestrian use only as there was no space on the Frankfurt side to build access ramps for a road bridge.
The Iron Bridge was re-worked in 1911. The bridge began on the Frankfurt river bank next to the customs tower (Rententurm). When the bridge opened in September 1869, users had to pay a toll of one Kreuzer which was applied to the construction costs of 120,000 Florins (Gulden). The toll was abolished when the city took over the bridge a short time later.
The bridge itself is made of iron, the bridgeheads of red sandstone. The 174 metre-long footpath has been adapted several times over the years. It was blown up at the end of Second World War, today's bridge is a reconstruction of the old Eiserner Steg.

If you are alone, wait a minute. The bridge is crossed daily by approximately 10,000 persons. One of these persons is friendly enough to make a nice picture of you.
