Geocache Description:

This offset cache offers you the opportunity to explore the small Dorset coastal town of Lyme Regis. Unless you are very lucky you will have to pay for parking either in the town, down by the Cobb or in the large car parks above the town to the east or west.

Granted a charter by Edward I in 1284; the birthplace in 1544 of Sir George Somers who discovered Bermuda; the landing place in 1685 of James, Duke of Monmoth on his ill-fated attempt to claim the crown; the birthplace in 1799 of Mary Anning considered to be the first 'fossilist'. In more recent times most of the film of Jane Austen's Persuasion was shot near here as was The French Lieutenant's Woman from the book by local author John Fowles.

To find the coordinates for this cache, you will have to visit two price lists in the town and then complete two addition sums in £:s:d.

The first price list is from 1459 and is at the Town Museum at the coordinates above. Please add together the cost of " Delyveraunce at the Port in the Town of " ;-

  • 16 tonnes of swete wyne

  • 4 fardells of canvas
  • 8 horses ( that passeth over the see).

Your answer is £A-Bs-Cd.

The second price list is from 1879 and can be found at N50.43.169,W002.56.219 on the wall of the Aquarium.(If you have not yet tried Stuey's "Cobblers" this would be an ideal time.) Your list is a little longer this time:-

  • 10 Puncheons of Sugar
  • 10 Carriages (with 4 wheels)
  • 17 passengers
  • 12 Hogshead of Beer
  • 5000 bricks
  • 4 horses
  • 6 Empty Barrels

Your answer will be £D-Es-Fd.

Check sum A+B+C+D+E+F = 19

The coordinates of the cache are:-

N 50.44.ABC W002.55.DEF

You will be able to see the cache site from the Cobb at roughly a 030 bearing. There is free parking for a few cars near the site ( Turn right at a post box on the hill and onto a "wooded incline". You could walk to it from the town centre but if you choose this then the 'Terrain' rating would increase as steeply as the cliff, but you could enjoy it.
