It was dark and cold. The damp air penetrated me right to the
bone. A dark figure approached. I had been studying a secret
society and it's meeting places for some upcoming cache locations. I must have been getting close, because I
received a mysterious phone call that stated that I was to meet someone at these
coordinates and that I would find the information I was seeking. The
person in the dark coat (it was impossible to tell whether it was a man or a
woman), stepped close and handed me an envelope without saying a word. I
tried to exchange a few pleasantries, but the dark figure remained impassive and
unresponsive. The letter read as follows:
Greetings,
My name is the Teacher.
You have penetrated our secret society about as safely as anyone is
allowed. This is your final warning. The choice is yours, either
stop your inquiries or submit yourself to a series of tests. At the end
of the tests you will be required to take an oath of secrecy, as all that
follow the Brotherhood are required to do. My assistant that brought the
letter will give you all the tools necessary to complete this first test.
At this point, the dark figure, as if reading over my shoulder, produced a
large heavy flashlight and handed it to me.
The flashlight in your hand will guide you through the woods to one of
many meeting places of our society. Go to the following coordinates to
the start of the trail: N 36 35.931 W 121 54.786. Good luck until
our next meeting.
I turned to ask the assistant a question, but he/she had vanished. I
shrugged my shoulders, turned on the flashlight and made my way to the
coordinates. At the trailhead I followed a series of small reflectors
through the woods until I got to a point that looked like a gathering had taken
place just moments ago. I assumed that this was the meeting place
described in the letter, so I grabbed a few of the reflectors and made a short
detour down the hill to hide a cache. I climbed back up to the trail after
stashing the cache and marking the area with four reflectors. The trail of
reflectors continued on until I found myself back at the beginning.
Climbing back into my car I noticed a note with the insignia of the Illuminati
under one of my windshield wipers. I opened it and read:
Congratulations. You have succeeded in completing the first
test. We will be in touch with you when future tasks are ready.
