The Hidden Lake Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

Geo Busters: Evidence suggests that this cache has been destroyed and unfortunately due to recent family changes it is unlikely that we are going to be able to go on a hike of this magnitude for quite some time. Therefore we have decided to archive it so that someone else can take advantage of this outstanding location.

Geocache Description:

Lake Tali Karng, considered a myth until the 1880's, is the gem awaiting you at the end of this walk.

Tali Karng is the only natural lake in the Victorian Alps, formed over 1500 years ago by a landslide. The water from the lake runs underground to become the Wellington River 150m below in the Valley of Destruction.
The difficulty rating for the cache is based on a return journey from the Wellington River car park (approx. 36km and 32 river crossings). The lake is also accessable from McFarlanes Hut (about a 24km round trip, no river crossings) and Millers Hut (8-10km round trip) however these two approaches have much steeper terrain. An overnight stay would be required for all but the most experienced hikers (except from Millers Hut).
The road is sealed all the way to the river car park and McFarlanes hut should be accessable to 2WD cache-mobiles during good weather, however Millers hut is 4WD only territory.
The cache is a 1L clear plastic container hidden not far from one of the camp sites on the western side of the lake.
